Set A Custom Donor Recognition Name On User And Household Records

January 5, 2026

Brought to you by UpStage’s CEO, Drew McManus

Not every feature needs a clever name. This one is called Default Donor Attribution, and it does exactly what it says: it gives admins a place to record how a donor wants to be recognized, separate from whatever their legal name happens to be. Riveting stuff. Also, genuinely useful.

Where This Shows Up

On User Records

Open a user’s Edit tab, and you’ll find the new field sitting in the Name and Role card. Head over to the Details tab, and it shows up between Role and Pinned Notes. If no value has been entered yet, that field stays blank; UpStage doesn’t guess on your behalf.

On Household Connections

Household connections work a bit like addresses already do: the primary user’s Default Donor Attribution value carries over automatically, so you’re not re-entering the same information twice. But if a specific connection needs its own recognition name, you can set one at the connection level, and it’ll override the value inherited from the primary user. You’ll find the field on the Details tab, between Household Salutation and Primary Email, and in the Edit tab’s Household Contact Info card.

How Reports Reflect It

Instant Gratification Reports

The Report Settings on the Edit and Setup tab now include Default Donor Attribution and a consolidated Phone option. The separate Cell and Text, Home Phone, and Work Phone options have been folded into that single Phone field.

On the report table itself, Default Donor Attribution now appears as its own column. When no custom value has been set, that column simply mirrors the user’s name, so the Name and Default Donor Attribution columns will match until an admin enters something different. You’ll also notice the old “No. Transactions” label has been shortened to Transactions; the data behind it hasn’t changed, just the word count.

Metrics And Analytics Reports

Under the Name group in the Edit and Setup tab, there’s a new checkbox to include Default Donor Attribution in the report output. Check it, and a new column appears at the end of the existing Name fields group. As with everything else here, it stays blank when no value has been recorded.

Consider This Field On Standby

Nothing about this feature forces a decision today. Every user and household connection will work exactly as it did before until someone chooses to fill in a Default Donor Attribution value. At that point, it starts flowing through dashboards and reports automatically, no extra setup required.
